Definition of Six Sigma
Six Sigma is a well-structured, data-driven methodology for
eliminating defects, waste, or quality control problems of
all kinds in manufacturing, service delivery, management, and
other business activities.
Six Sigma is a highly structured program.
Six Sigma methodology is based on the combination of well-established
statistical quality control techniques.
The term Six Sigma defines an optimum measurement of quality:
3.4 defects per million events. The Greek letter "ó" SIGMA
is a mathematical term that simply represents a measure
of
variation.
History
The roots of Six Sigma as a measurement standard can be traced
back to Carl Frederick Gauss (1777-1885).
In 1920's Walter Shewhart showed that three sigma is the point
where a process requires correction.
Bill Smith, a senior engineer and scientist within Motorola’s
Communications Division in the early and mid-1980s with Chairman
Bob Galvin at the helm, helped Motorola developed this new
standard.
In 1988 Motorola became the first company to win the Malcolm
Baldrige National Quality Award.
Idea Behind Six Sigma Project
The basic idea is to continuously reduce product and process
variation. It has proven to be successful, not only at improving
quality but also at producing large cost savings along with
those improvements.
The aim of any Six Sigma project is reduce errors or failures.
Identify an area where there is a problem, measure it, work
out why there is a problem, and then fix it. Identify an area
where there is a problem, measure it, work out why there is
a problem, and then fix it.
STAGES IN A SIX SIGMA PROJECT
To implment Six Sigma we follow the DMAIC Process.
1. Define
Project goals and boundaries, and issues that need to be addressed
to achieve the higher (better) sigma level.
2. Measure
Gather information about the current situation, to obtain
data on process performance, and to identify problem areas.
3. Analyze
Identify the root cause(s) of quality problems, and to confirm
those causes using the appropriate data analysis tools.
4. Improve
Implement solutions that address the problems (root causes).
5. Control
Evaluate and monitor improvement results
