8-D Problem-Solving (eight disciplines) is a step-by-step problem-solving methodology popularized by Ford Motor Company and now has become the Standard for the Automotive Industry for solving problems. With the 8-D problem-solving process, teams address and solve problems by uncovering and eliminating the root cause of the problem.

8-D Training can be time consuming and difficult to develop. It requires teaching the 8-D problem-solving process as well as data collection and analysis tools such as Pareto diagrams, fishbone diagrams, and flowcharts to name just a few. With 8-D Problem-Solving training employees can learn how to use the 8-D Problem-Solving Process at a time and place that is convenient, yet at the same time they will be fully prepared to serve on an 8-D problem solving team when assigned to their first project.

The Process

8D is a problem-solving methodology for product and process improvement. It is structured into eight disciplines, emphasizing team synergy. The team as whole is better and smarter than the quality sum of the individuals. Each discipline is supported by a checklist of assessment questions, such as “what is wrong with what”, “what, when, where, how much”.
